Motorcycle Security
|
It has been estimated that over 34,000 motorcycles are stolen each year in the UK and 80% of these from the owner’s home. There are simple steps you cab follow to make your cycle safer.
Security Tips
- Don’t leave your bike on show outside your home, lock it in your garage as soon as you arrive home. If parking outside, ensure you have a bike cover and opt for a cover which will cover the bike completely.
- Never leave keys in or near your bike, even if only for a few seconds. Try to keep keys with you at all times and do not leave them on clear view in your house.
- Fitting a security light on your property may act as a deterrent for thieves, especially if you are leaving the bike out in the open.
- Make sure your garage is secure if you plan to store your bike in there. Never leave tools inside your garage as thieves will often use these to then break bike locks. Try too to get a house alarm that will cover the garage too.
Security Devices
Marking - Marking your bike is a great security device – marking makes your bike much easier for the police to track down and deters professional thieves dealing in stolen parts. Marking should not be used alone though and should be combined with either an electrical or manual system.
Electronic Systems – A professionally fitted alarm and immobiliser combination is thought to be the best type of security system for motorcycles and can often lead to lower insurance premiums. You can also get DIY systems which you can fit yourself but these generally will not save you any money on insurance and in the long run it may be worth spending a little more to have one installed professionally. You should check with your individual insurance company about their policies on alarms before having one fitted.
Mechanical Systems – Good quality chains and padlocks too can act as good security devices. Make sure you lock your bike to something solid such however as the most common way of stealing a cycle is by both the bike and what it is tied to.
