Tips on Car Buying
|
Whether you are looking for a new or a used car, your first car or an additional run around for the family you need to be sure that you car you buy will suit your needs and that you buy safely. For ideas and advice on which car to buy, car magazines and motorshows can be great sources of information and provide you with detailed information and specifications. For a general overview the tips below aim at providing you with the basics of car buying.
The Used Car Expert and Parkers offer a comprehensive guide to buying a car.
New cars
You have 3 main options of where to buy your new car from, franchised dealers offer you the chance of low-rate finance schemes and trade in deals but car dealers often offer lower prices without the sales pressure and third option of importing from mainland Europe is often much cheaper and easier than people think.
Don’t be afraid to ask for discounts especially with car dealers and look out for special offers such as free insurance and cash back deals. Remember to shop around and if the dealer down the road will offer you a better deal barter with the current dealer and try to get them to match or beat the price. Many dealers will offer part exchange deals and although you may get a better price selling the car privately, part exchange is often more convenient and removes the hassle of private sales.
When collecting your new car:
Make sure the following are present:
- Copy of the dealer/broker’s pre-delivery inspection form
- Car Service Book
- A Road Tax Disc
- A Completed Invoice
- Car Manual
- Spare Wheels and tools
Make sure the following are in full working order:
- All interior and exterior lights
- Windscreen wipers
- Electric Windows
- Radio/electrical extras
- Door Locks
- Alarms
And ensure that there are no dents, damage or scratches to:
- Bodywork
- Windows
- Windscreens
- Interior including seats
- Wheels and wheel trims
Make sure you check all these things before you drive away with your new car.
Once you have purchased your car it is important to keep it well maintained – good Car Maintenance can save time and money.
